Hi,
Welcome to Frieda Talks, a blog dedicated to initiating critical conversations in relation to policy, practice and intervention in the field of domestic and sexual violence and abuse through the lens of our foundations of practice.
Our foundations of practice are the principles and practice methods that we believe uphold all our work with adult victims and survivors and children and young people as co-victims and co-survivors.
These foundations are essential in achieving inclusive and culturally competent practice that is anti-racist, and free of unconscious and conscious bias. Our foundations actively work to ensure intervention prevents the re-traumatisation of clients and the vicarious traumatisation of practitioners.
The Foundations of Practice enhance working in a way that promotes emotional, physical and psychological safety of those we support and advocate for.
We believe these foundations should not be considered specialisms but rather be integrated into all services, all policies, all practice and all procedures
Why Frieda Talks? Because, like Frieda, we believe in the power of communication to bring about change. Domestic abuse is a human rights violation affecting countless individuals worldwide, and it is through open dialogue that we can begin to highlight practices and institutions that facilitate and uphold perpetration, fail to assign perpetrator accountability and dismantle the barriers that impact on victims and survivors access to emotional, psychological, physical and spiritual support.
In Frieda Talks, we will be employing an intersectional perspective. Our identities - encompassing race, gender, class, and disability etc - are inextricably linked, shaping our experiences in complex ways. Through an intersectional lens, we'll explore how these intertwined identities influence the challenges faced by those subjected to domestic abuse and sexual violence and abuse and how we work to overcome them.
Equally important is a trauma-informed approach. Understanding the far-reaching effects of trauma is vital. We aim to cultivate content and environments that are cognisant of trauma and its impacts, and that are grounded in safety, trustworthiness, empowerment, and collaboration.
Furthermore, Frieda Talks advocates a person-centred approach. This entails recognising and honouring the unique experiences and values of those subjected to domestic and sexual violence and abuse. It's about validating individuals as the foremost authorities on their lives and ensuring they have agency in the choices that concern them.
This blog will delve into the ways in which domestic abuse impacts diverse communities, including but not limited to black women, trans individuals, and individuals with disabilities or chronic illnesses. We will also discuss the roles that society, employers, and each of us as individuals can play in supporting survivors and eradicating domestic abuse.
Join us on this enlightening journey with Frieda Talks. Let's unite to address the pressing issue of domestic abuse and work hand in hand towards building safer and more inclusive community.
